What is a Sabot Round?
A smaller projectile being shot out of a larger caliber
How are shotgun cartridges measured
The number of lead balls of a certain diameter that make up a pound of that size
How do civilians measure a round
Distance of the bore, from land to land, expressed in hundreths of an inch
How does the Military measure a round
Diameter of the bullet x the length of the cartridge case expressed in millimeters
What are the types of Bullets
Round nose and Schpitzer Tip
Flat base and Boat tail
What doe the carridge consist of
Bullet
Powder
Primer
Types of Cartridge cases
Rimmed
Semi-Rimmed
Rimless (same diamter than the cartridge)
Belted
Rebated (Less diameter than the cartridge)
Explain cartidge case composition and types
Brass wich is 70% copper and 30% zinc, which is the best

other types are steel, Plastic, and aluminum
Explain center fire and rim fire
Center fire is where the primer is located and struck in the center of the cartridge case in order to ignite

Rim fired is where the rim of the cartridge case is struck in order to ignite
What are the two types of primers
Boxer - British made, American used- one flash hole, anvil is built in to the primer
Berdan_ American made, everywhere else used, two flash holes,
Three types of magazines
Pan
Box
Drum
What are the three types of feeding mechanisms
Magazines
Belts
Clips
What is a battle sight
A pre set range that enables the shooter to hit the target between the throat and the waist without making adjustments
What are the three types of sights
Fixed sights
Adjustable sights
(Battle sight)
What are the three types of recoil
long
short
inertia
What are the three types of gas operation
Gas blast
Gas direct
Gas tappet
What are the 8 operating systems
bolt actiong
blockback
delayed blowback
recoil
recoil with gas assist
Gas operated
manual pump
revolving cylinder
What are 7 types of locking systems
rotating bolt
rising and lowering bolt
roller
rising barrel
locking flaps
swinging bolt
locking block
What is cocking
The act of the bolt group/slide moving and resetting the hammer or cocking lever
What is extracting
the forced removal of the cartridge case from the chamber by the extractor/bolt face as the bolt carrier group is moved reaerward
What is ejecting
th act of the cartridge case being removed from the bolt face by a tang of metal or spring loaded plunger
What is unlocking
The action of the bolt group moving rearward activating the weapons locking system and allowing reaerward movement of the bolt group
What is firing
The action of the trigger being squeezed with the hammer cocked and the weapon being off safe with a round in the chamber and the hammer hitting the firing pin which in turn strikes the primer on the cartridge case, igniting, and sending a projectile through the bore and out of the weapon system
What is locking
The action of the weapons locking system physically locking the projectile into the chamber sealing it off and enabling the weapon to fire
What is chambering
The act of the bolt pushing the nose of the round into the chamber
What is Feeding
Thee process of moving the round from the source of feed- to the chamber
What are the 8 cycles of function
Feeding
Chambering
Locking
Firing
Unlocking
Ejecting
Extracting
Cocking
What are the types of firing
Single action
Double Action
Semi auto only
Auto only
Selective fire
What is a gun target line?
An imaginary line from the weapons position to the target
What are the three phases of trajectory
Rising branch
Maximum ordinate
Falling branch
What is trajectory
The path of flight of the projectile once it leaves the bore of the weapon
What are the three types of ballistics
Internal :Everything that happens inside the weapon

External: Everything from when the projectile leaves the barrell and its flight in the air

Terminal: The Effect of the projectile on the target
What are the 5 types of FIRING PINS
Free floating
Interia
Percussion
Striker
Fixed
What is the Sear, and the three components that it operates
The sear is a component operated by the trigger which enables the weapon to fire by manipulating one of three parts. The bolt, firing pin, or hammer
What is a disconnector
A device the prevents the weapon from shooting more than one round per pull of the triiger, and enables the weapon not to fire until the action is fully closed
What is an ejector
A cam or other such piece that pushes the cartridge out of the weapons after the extractor has pulled the cartridge from the chamber
What is an extractor
A piece in the weapon that grabs the rim or extractor groove of the case and pulls it from the chamber
What is polygonal rifling
Rifling that instead of having "lands and gooves" has more of "hills and valleys" in polygonal shaping, lasts longer, more accurate, has less contact to the projectile, not supposed to use lead
How is rifling expressed
ie: LH 1: 12, meaning 1 turn per 12 inches
look for 2, 4 , 6
What is rifling
The grooves in the bore of the rifle which spin the projectile and help provide beter accuracy
What is a fluted chamber
When grooves are cut out of the chamber in order to eject the round as quickly as possible
What is muzzle break
Deflects gasses so that the shooter cannot feel as much recoil
What is Headspace
The Distance from the breech face to the chamber that stops the forward movement of the cartridge
What is a breechblock
Part that seals the breech in order to send the projectile downrange, it blocks gases from the cartridge
What are the two reference materials
STP-31-18b-34sm-tg
Janes Infantry Weapons
