ARTH 103 - Cubism and Futurism

loading
Unique Forms of Continuity in Space
Umberto Boccioni, 1913, Italian, Futurism. Human figure, very approximated. Accurate depiction of motion. Influenced by Victory of Samothrace.
Guitar, Sheet Music and Wine Glass
Pablo Picasso, 1912, Spanish, Synthetic Cubism. Very little is actually painted. "The Battle Has Started" -- news article about the Turks, but also message to Braque about their rivalry.
The Portuguese
Georges Braque, 1911, French, Analytical Cubism. Portrait of a Portuguese fisherman. Body takes on a triangular shape. Recognizable, but stretches limit of representation. Grande Bal in background -- popular bar at the time.
Les Demoiselles d'Avignon
Pablo Picasso, Spanish, 1907, Proto-Cubism. Human but very abstracted. Iberian and African roots/influences. Considered a cornerstone for art -- it was so bizarre that there was no turning back. Disunity between figures, still life is confrontational. Women stare with dead eyes; commentary on prostitution. Awkward positioning became iconic in cubism. Original sketches had male patrons, but he took out.
