Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket
James Abbott McNeill Whistler, American, 1875, Impressionism. Nocturne means "night scene." Without the title, the subject would probably be indecipherable. Whistler considered his works to be "visual music." Very abstract -- this is the most abstract of Whistler's works.
Wheatstack, Sun in the Mist
Claude Monet, French, 1891, Impressionism. No deeper message than what is depicted. Monet painted a series of 20 at different times and seasons, as a study of the place. Uncommon for artists to travel for paintings at the time. Shows relationship between light and color, characteristic of impressionist art.
A Bar at the Folies-Bergere
Edouard Manet, 1881-1882, French, Impressionism. Young woman waits to take order, involving the viewer in the image. Confusion over whether background is a mirror or another room. Woman looks bored, wants to enjoy time. Man may be propositioning a woman nearby.
Luncheon of the Boating Party
Auguste Renoir, French, 1881, Impressionism. Shows people enjoying leisure time, in response to French government allotting regular work times so that people could enjoy time off in the city. Figures are members of the Parisian art community. Man and woman discuss, suggesting that they're having an affair.
Olympia
Edouard Manet, 1863, French, Realism. Prostitute taking a break between clients, with a blank stare indicating that she is all business. The viewer is put in an uncomfortable position, questioning their morality. References Venus of Urbino by Titian. Extremely unpopular in France, needed to be displayed high above ground to avoid destruction.
