why is the sky blue?
sunlight reaches the earth's atmosphere and is scattered in all directions by the gases and particles in the air. blue light is scattered in all directions because it travels in shorter and smaller waves.
How do we know that we have been harmed by ultraviolet radiation? How can we protect ourselves from uv radiation?
Tanning/sunburns
we can wear sunscreen or stay out of the sun for extended periods of time
list 5 harmful effects of radiation
can cause cancer (UV-skin cancer), sun burns, nuclear bombs after effects, developmental problems for fetuses
list 5 benefits of radiation
heat up things, tell if a bone is broken, check to see if there are tumors/problems with muscles, dry hair, radio
what do the terms 'high-level radiation" and "low level radiation" mean?
high level radiation=lots of energy/high frequency
low level radiation=little energy/low frequency
exposure to high- level radiation can be harmful
put the colors in order from shortest wavelength to longest
red, orange, yellow, green. blue, indigo, violet
list the types of radiation in order from longest wavelength and lowest amount of energy
radio, microwave, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x-ray, gamma ray
how do microwaves relate to radio waves?
it is a type of radio wave
How fast do waves travel?
at the speed of light
Explain the relationship between wavelengths and frequencies. How does that relationship affect the level of radiation?
Long wavelength=low frequency=low level of radiation
Short wavelength=high frequency=high level of radiation
Why do we have to go into space to observe the EM spectrum?
electromagnetic radiation from space is unable to reach the surface of the earth except at a very few wavelengths, such as the visible spectrum, radio frequencies, and some ultraviolet wavelengths
What is radiation and what is it made up of?
radiation=energy in the form of waves
radiation is made up of energy
EM spectrum
an arrangement of waves based upon their wavelength and frequency
What levels of radiation do high and low wavelengths emit? Why?
Long wavelength=low frequency=low levels of radiation
Short wavelength=high frequency=high levels of radiation
list several examples of visible light radiation
fireflies, light bulbs, stars, rainbows
