ARTH 102 - Rococo Works
William Hogarth, 1734, English, Rococo. Satire of Rococo and hedonistic lifestyles. Satirizes French decadence -- man is so drunk he's unaware of the fact that he's being robbed, chamberpot on food, painting lit on fire, women have syphilis scars covered with beauty marks.
Jean-Honore Fragonard, 1767, French, Rococo. Woman is being pushed on a swing as a man looks up her skirt, while a bishop defends her honor. Very sensual and shallow. Catholic church doesn't have as much power anymore.
Antoine Watteau, 1717, Flemish-French, Rococo. Lovers are about to leave Cythera, a Roman island associated with Venus, goddess of love. Represents a return to reality -- you should enjoy being in love while you can.
