The Covering up of Zamzam The Jurhumites, who were at that time in control of Mecca (the Meccans tolerated their rule because Ismail's second wife had been of Jurhum), were driven out of Mecca on account of the injustices they began to commit. It was said they buried the well before their departure, probably as a sort of revenge. The advent of idols in Mecca The sons of Ismail became too numerous to all live in Mecca. Many went to settle elsewhere and those who did took with them stones from the precinct of the Ka'abah to perform rites in honor of them. Through the influence of their polytheistic neighbors, idols soon came to be added to the stones. Each year brought these emigrants, bringing their idols with them, as pilgrims, which soon led to pollution of idol worship in Mecca.
