The Two Fridas
Frida Kahlo, Mexican, Surrealism, 1939. Two portraits of artists, one in wedding gown, one in peasant outfit. Represents Kahlo's identity problems -- was a Communist, but came from a wealthy family. Heart, arteries and image of Rivera signifies their tumultuous relationship -- she cares for him, but it is painful.

Object (Luncheon in Fur)
Meret Oppenheim, French, Surrealism, 1936. Cup, saucer and spoon made of rabbit fur. Oppenheim had lunch with Picasso and he commented what if everything was made of fur -- she made in response to that. Combines sensuousness with repulsiveness.

The Persistence of Memory
Salvador Dali, Spanish, Surrealist, 1931. Naturalistic surrealism - things look realistic, but put in an unreal context. Melting clocks mean that in the land of dreams, time and technology have no meaning. Figure is distorted image of Dali. Ants signify Dali's fear of insects.

Mystery and Melancholy of a Street
Giorgio de Chirico, Italian, Surrealist, 1914. Uncomfortable use of perspective. Intense use of shadow -- looming shadow suggests something bad will happen to the little girl. Very ambiguous, nightmarish quality.
