Germany: A Winter's Tale George Grosz, 1918, German, Dada. War veteran eats dinner with dog, unaware of chaos surrounding. Three figures express what Grosz believed to cause German society to fall apart. Priest blesses profile of Grosz, military officer sternly holds weapons, teacher holds a copy of Goethe book and a military flag (more concerned with discipline than education). Implies that another war would follow this one. 0 CFraissi Fri, 07 May 2010 19:11:37 GMT view revision history
Mechanical Head (Spirit of the Age) Raoul Haussman, 1920, German, Dada. Scathing attack on German society. Head of a mannequin with dead looking eyes. Hollowed out -- meant to mean that people have no thoughts. Antenna looking part looks like the person is waiting to be told what to do by the government. #22 on face -- no identity. Message was that humans are too easily led and have no ingenuity. Also a statement of German society being in a state of chaos. 0 CFraissi Fri, 07 May 2010 19:11:37 GMT view revision history
The Fountain Marcel Duchamp, 1917, French, Dada. Urinal put on side, signed with another name and the date. Intention was to simply make people think -- there was no one answer to it. Signed with "R. Mutt," which could have referenced a popular cartoon strip called "Mutt and Jeff" with which Duchamp was familiar with when he first moved to America, or the company that manufactured the urinal, the R. Mott company. Message about society -- everything was going down the toilet. Duchamp made several copies, all of which he believed carried the same power. 0 CFraissi Fri, 07 May 2010 19:11:37 GMT view revision history
Composition in Red, Blue and Yellow Piet Mondrian, 1930, Dutch, De Stijl. Means to an artistic end -- if people could appreciate this as art, it would help to bring about a different interpretation of the world. Balance without symmetry as an alternative to the natural world. Use of color is significant to the balance, everything looks locked into place. Non-representational -- De Stijl believed that art should be elevated from reality. 0 CFraissi Fri, 07 May 2010 19:11:37 GMT view revision history
